Sermon of Saint Anthony
(Verona 1528 - Venice 1588)
Like Veronese’s St. John the Baptist Preaching (inv.137), this painting also entered the Collection in 1607 as a gift from the patriarch of Aquileia, Francesco Barbaro. It differs from other paintings by the artist in the greater simplicity of the composition, dominated by the brown tones of the almost oppressive atmosphere, which is interrupted by the gloomy green of the sky and the red cloak of the oriental figure portrayed from behind in the foreground. In the center, the saint is depicted in a lively oratorical pose as he points out to the incredulous onlookers the darting fish that have rushed to listen to him.
