The painting re-proposes the theme of the so-called 'Sacred conversation': a subject which, in the Veneto region, enjoyed great success in the first decades of the sixteenth century. The panel is traditionally ascribed to Negretti as part of his early production; lately it has been proposed to refer it, together with other stylistically similar works, to the figure, not yet identified, of the so-called Master of the Chantilly Madonna. Even the identification of the two saints has raised questions, Anthony and Job or Francis and Jerome? The lack of precise attributes still makes this choice problematic.
