La tavola, vista forse nel 1648 "in casa del principe Borghese", raffigura il tema del guerriero e del paggio, assai frequente in ambito giorgionesco. Il dipinto, già interpretato come "Davide e Golia", rendono inconsueta tale rappresentazione, spingendo la critica a formulare altre ipotesi di lettura del soggetto - peraltro poco convincenti - come "Saul e Davide" o "Astolfo e Orrile". L'estrema durezza della resa pittorica non permette di ritenere del tutto soddisfacente il riferimento a Dosso Dossi, al quale forse spetta l'originaria composizione dell'opera, di cui esistono svariate repliche.
